Exhibition integrates art and interactivity to present revolutionary concepts of mathematics

The exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences in Sao Cristovao Brazil from January 22, 2015.

Success in France, the exhibition "View in three-dimensional Spaces" uses images, animations and interactive facilities to let the visitors feel immersed in three-dimensional environments.

After being presented successfully in important institutions in France, including University of Paris, the exhibition "View in three-dimensional Spaces" arrives in Brazil in order to reveal the beauty contained in some revolutionary concepts of mathematics, especially in the field of geometrization. For that combines art and interactive facilities that provide the audience the feeling of being really immersed in three-dimensional environments. The concepts are described without formulas and with minimal text.

The holding of the exhibition is a collaborative effort of a multidisciplinary team formed by Brazilian researchers and French artists and major institutions such as Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, France), Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins (MAST) and Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)

The project is part of a high-level scientific research in Mathematics which, through the exhibition, aims to present to the public the results of Grigori Perelman's work. In 2002, the Russian mathematician solved the famous Poincaré Conjecture, a mathematical problem that was unsolved since 1904. Perelman also proved the theorem of the American mathematician William Thurston on the classification of 3D spaces. In the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to see for the first time in the history of Mathematics, views of all eight Thurston geometries. During the visit the public can become familiar with these concepts and better understand the nature of three-dimensional spaces.
